Infrared distance sensors use light pulses for distance measurement. The reflections of the light pulses are detected and analysed. The sensors fit well for objects of medium size and detect e.g. sound absorbing surfaces where ultrasonic sensors would fail. Infrared sensors should be used together with ultrasonic sensors since they are susceptible to faults by direct solar radiation. The measuring range of infrared sensors depends on its size which is why different sensors are used for different distances to be measured. The sensors are small, cost-effective and low-weight. Transparent obstacles such as glas can not be detected reliably. Used together with ultrasonic sensors as a complementary solution those sensors are ideal for many applications.
