TAGEBAU project completed

On April 8, 2025, the final digital event of the TAGEBAU research project funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) took place. The project, coordinated by Emqopter GmbH, developed an innovative drone system for autonomous surveying of former mining areas - an important contribution to structural change in affected regions.

A coaxial octocopter with a powerful on-board PC was developed as part of the project. Equipped with a high-resolution camera, a 360° 3D LiDAR sensor and a 3-axis gimbal, the system enables AI-supported surveying and volume calculation. This improves the planning of construction projects and material requirements in order to make former mining areas usable again.

Moderated by Emqopter's General Manager (fin.) Marvin Bihl, the virtual event offered exciting insights into the project results for around 50 participants . In a panel discussion, representatives from science and practice - including the Fraunhofer IVI, topodat and the Cottbus-Neuhausen airfield company - discussed the opportunities and challenges of using drones in surveying.

The background to the project is, that previous methods of data collection - such as manual surveying - are either very time-consuming or expensive and harmful to the environment due to the use of airplanes for the surveying of large areas. Drones actually offer the perfect cost-benefit ratio for data collection, especially in the corresponding sizes of construction projects.

TAGEBAU impressively demonstrates how digital technologies can contribute to increasing efficiency, conserving resources and economic development in regions undergoing structural change.

The project video clearly illustrates the use case from the project.
